Q1. There is a video circulating regarding Zakir Naik speaking about masturbation being permissible. He claims it is Makrooh (undesirable). Is he correct in the light of Sharia and if not, what is the correct verdict in Islam?
A1. Masturbation is Haraam and a grave sin. Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “The one that marries the hand (that is, engages in masturbation) is cursed.”
الاستمناء باليد حرام لقوله صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم: ناكح اليد ملعون (الدر المختار و حاشية ابن عابدين 1/285)
Consider the following narrations:
ومن الناس من استدل على تحريمه بشيء آخر نحو ما ذكره المشايخ من قوله صلى الله عليه و سلم ناكح اليد ملعون وعن سعيد بن جبير عذب الله تعالى أمة كانوا يعبثون بمذاكيرهم
وعن عطاء سمعت قوما يحشرون وأيديهم حبالى وأظن أنهم الذين يستمنون بأيديهم والله تعالى أعلم (روح المعاني 18/11)
Hadrat Saeed Bin Jubair Radiallahu Anhu narrates, “Allah Ta’ala punished a nation that used to play with their private parts.”
Ataa Rahimahullah states that: “I heard that a nation will be resurrected on the day of Qiyaamah in a state that their hands will be pregnant, and I think that these were people who used to masturbate with their hands.”

Q2. What position of scholarly authority does Zakir Naik hold according to our Ulama?
A2. Alhamdulillah, we are blessed with many righteous and pious Ulama in our country. We suggest that you listen to their discourses so that one may be guided in accordance to the Quraan and Sunnah. We advise abstention from listening to modern and liberal scholars who have deviated from the correct path.
