QUESTION:
Is it permissible to tie the hair into a bun? Would that be considered as a “camel hump”? Please elaborate on the ruling regarding tying the hair in a way that resembles a camel hump.
ANSWER:
It is mentioned in Roohul Bayaan under the explanation of ‘their heads are like the humps of camels’, that they enhance their heads with their scarfs and headgear to the extent that it resembles the humps of camels. Tying the hair in a manner that it is not visible to the onlooker at all is acceptable. However, if it is enhanced and increased in size which makes it visible, or it is visible due to a large bun, then it is not permissible as it falls in the category of a camel hump. In the pictures provided, the camel humps are clearly visible in all cases hence it will not be permitted. In conclusion, women should refrain from tying their hair in a bun or in any other way whereby it is visible and resembles the camel hump. Women should rather tie their hair in a plait if they are required to leave the home due to necessity so that the head is not enhanced in any way whatsoever.
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” صِنْفَانِ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ لَا أَرَاهُمَا بَعْدُ، نِسَاءٌ كَاسِيَاتٌ عَارِيَاتٌ، مَائِلَاتٌ، مُمِيلَاتٌ، عَلَى رُءُوسِهِنَّ أَمْثَالُ أَسْنِمَةِ الْبُخْتِ الْمَائِلَةِ، لَا يَرَيْنَ الْجَنَّةَ، وَلَا يَجِدْنَ رِيحَهَا (مسند احمد)
“مائلات” أي : إلى الرجال “رؤوسهن كأسمة البخت” يعني يعظمن رؤوسهن بالخمر والقلنسوة حتى تشبه اسنمة البخت “المائلة” من الميل لأن أعلى السنام يميل لكثرة شحمه “لا يدخلن الجنة ولا يجدن ريحها وإن ريحها ليوجد من مسيرة كذا وكذا” أي : يوجد من مسيرة أربعين عاماً. (روح البيان ص28 ج2)
