Question:-
Please advise whether it would be permissible to name a child ‘Khalid’ or must another name such as “Ahmed” or “Muhammad” be attached to it. I was told that “Khalid” means “eternal”, and since this quality can only be attributed to our Creator, it would be wrong to give the name “Khalid” to someone.
Answer:-
There is no harm in naming one’s child “Khalid”. Hadrat Khalid Bin Waleed is a well-known Sahaabi of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam, who fought a number of battles and was a very successful Commander of the Muslim Army. There was no other name joined together with his name hence, there is no harm in naming one’s son “Khalid”. Similarly, there is a narration of Khalid-Al-Johani in the kitaabs of Hadith wherein he states that, Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam was performing Salaah with the Sahaabah when a blind person appeared and thereafter, fell into a well. This resulted in the Sahaaba laughing aloud in Salaah. Here again, the name of the narrator was ‘Khalid’ without a second name being attached to his name. In the narration recorded below, Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam also used the name ‘Khalid’ without raising any objection to it.
