QUESTION:
My sister is getting married and my family wants to have a Quraan/Yaseen Khatm the night before the Nikaah. Is this allowed or is it considered Bid’ah?
ANSWER:
There is no proof of such a practice in the Quraan and Hadith, hence the said practice will be considered a Bid’ah. When Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam decided to get Hadrat Fatima Radiallahu Anha married, he called a few Sahaaba to the Masjid and handed her over in marriage to Hadrat Ali Radiallahu Anhu. There was no custom of Khatm of Quraan Sharif as is vogue nowadays, and which is generally accompanied with a host of other customs. Similarly, our pious predecessors got their daughters married with simplicity without any function or Khatm before the Nikah or after the Nikah. The Walimah is held by the groom’s party which is Sunnah.
