Sajdah On A Sponge

QUESTION:

A 70 year-old lady has knee and ankle injuries. She sits on a chair to perform Salaah. Will it be permissible for her to sit on the floor on a soft, sponge mattress n make Sajdah on it as well?

ANSWER:

If the sponge is sufficiently firm that her forehead settles and does not continue sinking when she presses down, Sajdah on it will be valid. If it is extremely soft and her head continues sinking into it, Sajdah on it will not be valid. If the forehead is firm on the ground at the time of Sajdah, the Salaah will be valid.

ولو سجد على الحشيش أو التبن أو على القطن أو الطنفسة أو الثلج إن استقرت جبهته وأنفه ويجد حجمه يجوز وإن لم تستقر لا (الفتاوى الهندية 1 /70)

(وَشَرْطُ سُجُودٍ) مُبْتَدَأٌ وَمُضَافٌ إلَيْهِ (فَالْقَرَارُ) خَبَرٌ بِزِيَادَةِ الْفَاءِ (لِجَبْهَةٍ) أَيْ يُفْتَرَضُ أَنْ يَسْجُدَ عَلَى مَا يَجِدُ حَجْمَهُ بِحَيْثُ إنَّ السَّاجِدَ لَوْ بَالَغَ لَا يَتَسَفَّلُ رَأْسَهُ أَبْلَغَ مِمَّا كَانَ عَلَيْهِ حَالُ الْوَضْعِ، فَلَا يَصِحُّ عَلَى نَحْوِ الْأُرْزِ وَالذُّرَةِ، إلَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي نَحْوِ جَوَالِقَ، وَلَا عَلَى نَحْوِ الْقُطْنِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْفُرُشِ إلَّا إنْ وُجِدَ حَجْمُ الْأَرْضِ بِكَبْسِهِ
