Salaah While Seated On A Chair-Follow Up

Q1. Is the Fatwa for reading Salaah while sitting on a chair the same for Shafi’ee and Hanafi Madhabs? If not, what are the differences?

A1. Our Darul Ifta only cites rulings according to the Hanafi Madhab. As such, the Fatwa discussed regarding sitting on a chair and performing Salaah is according to the Hanafi Madhab. You may refer to a Shafi’ee Mufti for a ruling in the Shafi’ee Madhab. 

Q2. Are there different rules for Fardh and Sunnah Salaah?

A2.Regarding sitting in Sunnah Salaah, Fuqaha (Jurists) state that it is permissible to sit and read Sunnah and Nafl Salaah, however, this refers to sitting on the floor and not on a chair.

فصل في صلاة النفل جالسا والصلاة على الدابة

يجوز النفل قاعدا مع القدرة على القيام لكن له نصف أجر القائم إلا من عذر ويقعد كالمتشهد في المختار وجاز إتمامه قاعدا بعد افتتاحه قائما بلا كراهة على الأصح
