Selling Timeshares for Sun City Resorts

QUESTION:

Would it be permissible to sell a holiday at the resorts in Sun City? If it is impermissible, will the ruling be the same for other holiday resorts where different evils are found?

ANSWER:

While it will be permissible to sell a holiday timeshare resort in Sun City, the sale and the income accrued will be Makrooh (abhorred) due to the seller becoming a means of assisting in sin. Hence, one should not sell such timeshare holidays. (Re: – Jawaahirul Fiqh Vol.7 Pg.508/514 / Fataawa Darul Uloom Zakariyya Vol.5 Pg.664)

One may not be a gambler but perhaps by going to such type of resorts, one may be tempted to go into the casino and gamble. Hence, you may become the means for such a wrong.

The Quraan Sharif states:

وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ

“And do not assist in sin and transgression.” [Surah Maa’idah, Verse 2]

When Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam had passed by a place where the punishment of Allah Ta’ala descended, he would hurry and move swiftly from there lest the evil repercussion of the punishment afflicts him as well. Today, we as the Ummah of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam are willing to sell timeshares at such resorts which attract the wrath and anger of Allah Ta’ala. Imagine how low the Ummah of Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam has stooped to.

Regarding selling other resorts which have aspects of sin and evil, this also falls under the above-mentioned ruling.

In conclusion, while Islam does not discourage a person to take a break in order to rejuvenate one’s self for the worship of Allah Ta’ala, it should however, be in a quiet and peaceful environment which is free from Fitnah.
