QUESTION:
A person was gifted a watch. Unfortunately, the watch is a bit tight and cannot be extended as it is made with leather straps. The watch can, however, fit on the left hand. Will it be sinful to wear it on the left hand?
ANSWER:
To wear a watch on both hands is permissible. Some Ulema have mentioned that since a watch is used for good deeds such as checking the time for Salaah etc. it should be worn on the right hand.
عن عائشةَ ، قالَت : كانَ رسولُ اللَّهِ صلَّى اللَّهُ علَيهِ وسلَّمَ يُحبُّ التَّيمُّنَ ما استطاعَ في شأنِهِ كلِّهِ في طُهورِهِ وتَرجُّلِهِ ونعلِهِ (سنن أبي داود #4140)
Aaishah Radiallahu Anha reports that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam loved using the right hand as far as possible in all his affairs, in attaining purify, combing his hair, and wearing his shoes.”
In conclusion, if the watch does not fit on the right hand, you may wear it on the left hand.
