QUESTION:
Are men allowed to wear the metal, “Zirconium”?
ANSWER:
Zirconium is made from Zircon sand. It is very lightweight. In fact, black Zirconium is only about ¼ the weight of pure steel, yet considerably stronger. Since men are only permitted to wear rings made of silver with the proviso that it does not exceed 4.374g in weight, it will not be permissible to wear a ring made of Zirconium.
عن ابن بريدة، عن أبيه، قال: جاء رجل إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وعليه خاتم من حديد، فقال: ما لي أرى عليك حلية أهل النار؟ ثم جاءه وعليه خاتم من صفر، فقال: ما لي أجد منك ريح الأصنام؟ ثم أتاه وعليه خاتم من ذهب، فقال: ارم عنك حلية أهل الجنة؟ قال: من أي شيء أتخذه؟ قال: من ورق ولا تتمه مثقالا (سنن الترمذي #1785)
Also, wearing a ring is Sunnah for those in need of a ring such as a king, judge and those in that category. As for those that are not in need of using a ring, it is better for them not to wear it.
ولا يتختم إلا بالفضة لحصول الاستغناء بها فيحرم بغيرها كحجر(الدر المختار و حاشية ابن عابدين 1/654 (
ثم التختم سنة لمن يحتاج إليه كالسلطان والقاضي ومن في معناهما ومن لا حاجة له إليه فتركه أفضل
والسنة أن يكون قدر مثقال فما دونه ويكره التختم بالحديد والصفر للرجال والنساء لأنه حلية أهل النار وقد نهى عنه (الاختيار لتعليل المختار 4/159)
