Making Dua for a deceased Kaafir

May 6, 2023 | Janaazah

Question:-

A lady is working for the same organization as us. She is from a Muslim family but is married to a non-Muslim. Her husband passed away and was cremated. Our manager organized for us all to visit and sympathize with her.  When we got there, her husband’s photo was displayed between two flames in bowls. She had prepared supper for everyone, and then requested us to make Dua. An Alim made the Dua. Is this correct?

Answer:-

You stated in your query that the lady was married to a non-Muslim. Furthermore, there was a picture displayed in the home between two flames (in a bowl) which confirms his Kufr. Also, the deceased was cremated, which is also customary of the Kuffar. Hence, it was totally impermissible to visit her and make Dua for her deceased husband who died upon Kufr. The Quraan Sharif states:

مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَن يَسْتَغْفِرُواْ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُواْ أُوْلِي قُرْبَى مِن بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْجَحِيمِ

It is not (permissible) for the Nabi, nor (is it permissible for) the Mu’mineen to (ever) seek forgiveness for the Mushrikeen, even if they be their relatives, after it has become clear to them (when these Mushrikeen died without Imaan) that they (the Mushrikeen) are to be residents of the Blaze (Jahannam).

In conclusion, those that visited and participated in the Dua should repent for their error.
